The Mess
Sculpture
Concept
"The Mess" is a sculpture that captures the chaotic intensity of human struggle,
reflecting the themes of turmoil, resilience, and survival. The composition is filled
with intertwined figures—riders, horses, animals, and an eagle—locked in a whirlwind of
motion. It symbolizes both the fragility and the unbreakable spirit of people facing
challenges, embodying the essence of the Kazakh word жанталас—a frantic struggle, a
desperate effort in the midst of chaos.
Processes & Tools
Carved from a single piece of wood, "The Mess" was created with meticulous attention to
detail, using traditional hand tools to bring out the raw power of movement. Each figure
is sculpted in dynamic tension, where sharp cuts and layered textures emphasize the
energy of the scene. The artist intentionally preserved the natural texture of the wood,
allowing its organic lines to merge with the dramatic forms of people and animals,
amplifying the sense of urgency.
